kerala blast

Today, on 29 October, in the morning, around 9:40 am, multiple explosions occurred in Jehovah’s Witnesses convention at Zamra International Convention and Exhibition Centre in Kalamassery, Ernakulam. The blast happened during a Christian prayer meeting of the Jehovah’s Witnesses (a sect of Christianity which denies the trinity) that was going on in the centre.

Conspired Bomb Blast?

The first blast happened ten minutes after the prayer, and two subsequent explosions created panic in the venue. One woman died, six were critically injured and more than thirty people had burn injuries. It is apprehended that more than 2,000 people were present during the blast.

The Kerala Director General of Police (DGP) Shaik Darvesh Saheb confirmed the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) in a tiffin box as per the preliminary investigation and Kerala police is constituting a special team for further investigations. Around noon, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Bomb Squad and Forensics team reached the spot. By evening, National Security Guards (NSG) eight-member team will reach Ernakulam to conduct the probe.

The police have released a number for the call centre, for people to contact for lost belongings or other needs: 0484-2423513

In the wake of a blast, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called for an all-party meeting on Monday morning. He stated the blast was ‘very unfortunate’ and considered it as serious. He directed all the senior police officials and ministers to visit the blast site.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed he is shocked and dismayed by the bomb attack on a religious gathering. He demanded swift state action and urged all religious leaders to unite in condemning such barbaric activities and violence.

Who is Behind the Blast?

Kerala BJP President Surendran alleged that Kerala became the breeding ground for all terror outfits. The LDF and UDF are encouraging communal elements like the banned Popular Front. He blamed the Kerala government for the lethargic approach and intelligence failure to cease terror attacks.

Surendran registered a strong condemnation for Khaled Mashal, the leader of Hamas, who participated in a virtual protest demonstration programme sponsored by an Islamist group in Kerala in response to Israel’s War with the militant outfit Hamas. The Mashal’s involvement in the event orchestrated by the Solidarity Youth Movement (SYM), the youth wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, took place on Saturday, 28 October.

During the event hosted by the district wing of the SYM in Malappuram, the BJP leader made a claim that Mashal’s involvement in the event signifies the level to which historically secular Kerala has reached.

Denying Allegations against Hamas involvement!

Suhaib CT, the state president of the Solidarity Youth Movement, provided a rationale for endorsing the Hamas leader’s virtual engagement. He actively participated in our scheduled programme aimed at expressing sympathy with the Palestinian population and denouncing the aggressive actions carried out by Israel. There’s no need to see anything unusual in that.

Further, he said, Hamas is not an active organisation within India, nor is it considered a banned organisation. Consequently, his involvement with Hamas does not violate the law. According to Suhaib, it is anticipated that a greater number of solidarity events would take place in India, serving as a testament to the support extended by the Indian population towards the Palestinian people.

V. Muraleedharan, MoS for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, said that the bomb blast in a prayer meeting is a shocking incident. It is disturbing to witness that Kerala is becoming a place of such untoward incidents, which is deemed as a terrorist act. Further, he stated that the Home Minister had already spoken to the CM and I also had a conversation with the CM regarding this terror attack.

The Administration reacts!

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan said that he was shocked to know about the blast at a religious gathering and extended his condolences to the grieved ones.

However, the Ernakulam District Police Chief said that Social Media is under scrutiny after the violent incident. There will be strict action against those who incite communalism, hateful messages and spreading fake news.
