India’s foreign minister, S Jaishankar, expressed the view that India should redefine its approach to international relations and establish its own perspective rather than adhering to the narrative dictated by Western intellectualism. During a speech at an international relations conference held at Symbiosis International University in Pune, the minister noted that the field of international relations predominantly employs Western terms such as ‘trojan horse’ and ‘Gordian knots’, which were introduced by the British.
“In our daily lives, we commonly employ phrases such as Pyrrhic victory, Gordian knots, and Trojan horse.” These items are not merely utilised, but we have made them universally applicable. Most of these intellectual notions, traditions, and conceptions generally characterise British culture.

Why Should We Construct a New Narrative?
Some individuals occasionally perceive it as politics, while others interpret it as a form of wordplay, suggesting a potential linguistic meaning. “However, if you examine the term Bharat closely, you will find that it currently holds various symbolic meanings in different fields,” he stated.
Jaishankar discussed four dimensions of the “narrative” of Bharat. From an economic standpoint, we will discuss the concept of “Atmanirbhar Bharat”. “It carries connotations of resilience, self-sufficiency, contribution, and the expression of talent,” he stated.
“In terms of development, when we mention Bharat today, it also signifies a dedication to establishing an inclusive, equitable, and just society, ensuring that no individual is neglected. This, in many aspects, is the genuine measure of development,” he further stated.

Bharat as Global Friend
He emphasised the importance of approaching history with a new perspective and a receptive mindset. Setting aside political biases and taking a detached and impartial perspective makes it evident that our recent history is intricate and our thoughts are significantly nuanced, stated the minister. Our future will not fully develop in that manner unless we establish our own cultural underpinnings. Presently, Bharat necessitates the development of its distinct and unique storyline.
He further expressed the intention to shape Bharat as a vishwamitra, meaning a friend of the globe. As a reliable friend who has consistently demonstrated support during critical moments. Exhibited an unprecedented level of proactive engagement that is atypical in the realm of international politics. A culture that continues to provide vaccinations domestically while demonstrating a willingness to distribute these immunisations globally.

Balancing Global South
According to Jaishankar, in order for us to represent the global south and achieve more significant rebalancing, it is crucial that we not only focus on the economics, politics, and technology of the world but also consider cultural history, traditions, political science, and international relations. The minister emphasised the importance of assuming responsibility, particularly in instances like the G20, and stressed the need for a purposeful and dedicated approach towards addressing the needs of the global south. This comprehensive approach is necessary to bring about significant changes in the world over the next 50 years.
Manifestation of Autonomy
Jaishankar characterised the concept of Bharat as a “manifestation of autonomy” and a “proclamation” of India’s interaction with the international community based on its unique conditions and distinct “character.” Bharat represents a declaration of autonomy. The statement emphasises that although India interacts with the international community, it is not obligated to conform to the rules or frameworks established by others. As he asserted, the stated purpose of the engagement is “to authentically express our own individuality and innate attributes.”
Cultural Ties with West and East
According to him, India has effectively served as a “bridge” connecting the East and the West by convening the leaders of the G20 for the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration. However, he said that New Delhi managed to do so despite concerns expressed before the leaders’ conference. Jaishankar emphasised that the G20 is the foremost economic and political global alliance. However, he also highlighted the importance of cultural “rebalancing” to establish equitable global ties among all nations.
Demonstrating Democracy to Global Community
In discussing democracy, it is crucial to recognise that democracy should exist not only inside a society but also among societies,” he elaborated. He emphasised that 200 countries worldwide have at least 200 distinct cultures.” How can we bestow value and demonstrate respect towards every one of them? The subject is significant and is currently a major concern for the global community.
