Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday approved the Karnataka Multi-Sector Disaster and Climate Resilience Project worth Rs.5,000 crore aimed at institutional strengthening and capacity-building by reorganising climate and disaster relief management.
The project is assisted by the World Bank, which will pitch in Rs.3,500 crore for the same.

What is this Karnataka Multi-Sector Disaster and Climate Resilience Project?
Bengaluru, involving the development of rajakaluves, waterfronts, the construction of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Water Treatment Plants (WTPs), the restoration of lakes, the replenishment of groundwater through floodwater, and the effective management of wastewater.
Additionally, the project envisions institutional strengthening and capacity building through the restructuring of governance systems for climate and disaster relief management, along with repurposing efforts, among other initiatives. The project involves receiving Rs.3,500 crore in assistance from the World Bank and Rs.1,500 crore in State grants. The proposal will be forwarded to the Union Department of Economic Affairs for their endorsement to the World Bank.

The government plans to spend Rs.5,000 crore over a seven-year period, divided into two phases. The project has mainstream flood and drought risk management by updating and operationalizing the Karnataka Water Policy, 2022, and enhancing climate finance accessibility by leveraging the government budget, programs, and schemes.
Apart from this, the Karnataka state government has also cleared the K-SHORE project worth Rs 840 crore to make the state’s coastline plastic-free, which is also a World Bank project.
