Insensitive Anti-Farmer Comment Lands Karnataka Minister Shivanand Patil in Trouble

Karnataka’s Agricultural Marketing Minister, Shivanand Patil has ignited a controversy with remarks suggesting that farmers in the state desire drought conditions to benefit from government-sponsored farm loan waivers. The divisive comments made during an event in Chikkodi have drawn widespread criticism and raised questions about the government’s understanding of farmers’ challenges.

Patil’s statements implied that farmers intentionally hope for droughts as it leads to the government waiving their loans. He highlighted the provision of free resources such as water, electricity, seeds, and fertilisers, suggesting that farmers shouldn’t expect continual government assistance.

Predicting Droughts Every 3-4 Years

The minister went further to predict that the state would face drought-like situations every three to four years due to climatic conditions. This assertion, coupled with his earlier remarks, has fueled concerns about the government’s approach to addressing the recurring challenges faced by farmers.

Political Backlash

The opposition, particularly the state BJP unit, has vehemently criticised Patil’s comments. Leader of opposition R. Ashok has called for Patil’s removal from the Cabinet, citing his insensitivity toward farmers. Ashok pointed out Patil’s track record of making anti-farmer statements, including ridiculing those who committed suicide due to the burden of loans.

Moreover, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi said, “He should withdraw his statement and apologise. A person in a responsible position should not give such irresponsible statements.”

Demand for Minister’s Dismissal

The demand for Patil’s dismissal has gained momentum, with political figures like former Telangana minister K.T. Rama Rao also condemned his statements. Rao expressed disbelief at the minister’s remarks, emphasising that no farmer would wish for drought. He called out the need for empathy from the government, especially during challenging conditions.
