Andhra Pradesh: CM Jagan Inaugurates YSR Sujaladhara Water Scheme and unveil a 200-bed hospital in Uddanam

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is set to inaugurate the ‘YSR Sujaladhara’ water scheme on December 14 in Makharampuram village, Kanchili mandal, Srikakulam district. The initiative, spearheaded by Animal Husbandry Minister Seediri Appalraju, aims to address the high prevalence of chronic kidney diseases (CKD) in the Uddanam region.

Key Highlights of the project

Water Supply to Uddanam Region: With an investment of ₹700 crore since April 2020, the project involves the supply of approximately 1.12 tmc ft of Vamsadhara water from Hiramandalam reservoir to 807 villages in Uddanam, known for its waterborne CKD issues.

Water Treatment Plant: A water treatment plant, with a daily purification capacity of 84 million litres, has been constructed to ensure the delivery of clean water to the affected region.

Gratitude and Progress: Minister Seediri Appalraju expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister, anticipating that the project would provide a permanent solution to CKD. Works have been completed in 613 villages, with the remaining areas scheduled for completion soon.

Inauguration of Super Speciality Hospital: In addition to the water scheme, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy will inaugurate the 200-bed Dr YSR Kidney Research and Super Speciality Hospital, constructed at a cost of Rs 85 crore in Palasa, on the same day.

Dr YSR Kidney Research & Super Speciality Hospital Features

  • Treatment free of cost for kidney patients.
  • Advanced medical facilities, including dialysis units.
  • Four floors across three blocks, featuring special wards, pathology labs, microbiology labs, biochemistry labs, nephrology, urology, general medicine, and post-operative/ICU research labs.

YSR Sujaladhara Project Details

  • Drawing water from Hiramandalam reservoir.
  • Aimed at supplying purified drinking water to 807 villages in 7 mandals of Palasa and Ichchapuram constituencies.

The State government, prioritizing the well-being of Uddanam’s residents, has completed recruitment for specialty doctors and support staff in various departments.

Future Water Requirements

The project aims to meet future water requirements, supplying 100 litres per head per day. Currently, water is being supplied to 613 villages, with the remaining villages set to receive water by the end of the month. Uddanam has been recognized by WHO as one of the world’s three most kidney disease-prevalent areas, affecting about 35,000 people in seven mandals of the region.

Researchers have pointed to groundwater consumption as a contributing factor, recommending the supply of protected drinking water. The super specialty hospital and research centre aim to conduct further research on Uddanam Nephropathy, providing comprehensive healthcare solutions.
