Indian Captain Rohit Sharma and Batting Super Star Virat Kohli broke a heap of records during the outstanding victory against Afghanistan in the World Cup 2023 match at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. In this match, Rohit Sharma broke a series of World Records, albeit social media’s attention went to Virat Kohli.

When Rohit bats in a full-fledged way, other batters seem mortal. When he scored 84 balls 131 against Afghanistan on Wednesday, he surpassed swashbuckling Caribbean opener Chris Gayle’s record of most number of sixes in international cricket. Rohit now holds the following records, which is a great feat for any ICC player:

  • Rohit Sharma holds the record of most international sixes with 556* in just 473 innings, surpassing Gayle’s mark in 551 innings.
  • Rohit’s 63-ball century is the fastest World Cup hundred, breaking Virender Sehwag’s 81-ball hundred against Bermuda in 2007.
  • Rohit surpassed the record of Sachin Tendulkar with his seventh hundred. Most Centuries in the World Cup in 19 innings in three editions.
  • Rohit became the fastest Indian and batter to Score 1000 ODI runs in 19 innings, equalling Aussies southpaw David Warner.
  • Rohit became the first batsman to smash 350 sixes in Asia.
  • Rohit became the oldest Captain to score a World Cup hundred (36 years old, 164 days)

Virat The Run Machine

Virat Kohli is an indomitable run machine across all formats, separating him from the crowd. Aussies batting legend Steven Smith heaped praise on Virat Kohli, stating, “Arguably, he is the Best ODI Player of all time.”

In the match against Afghanistan at Delhi, Virat Kohli broke Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most runs in the ICC World Cup.

Virat Kohli, most runs 2,279* in the Men’s World Cup (ODI’s and T20Is) in 53 innings, surpassing record of the Great Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli also broke Tendulkar’s record of most 50-plus scores in successful ODI chases.

Records aside, It is a treat to watch Virat and Rohit play together at their full potential. The match against Afghanistan will be remembered for the records and also the memories.
