In a dynamic session on 28.11.2023, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) Commissioner Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar engaged with members of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) team and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The occasion marked an assessment of the ongoing projects funded by GEF as part of the Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot (SCIAP) initiative.

Evaluating Progress: GEF-UNIDO SCIAP Initiative in Action

Representatives from GEF and UNIDO, leading international bodies, were on-site in Vijayawada to evaluate the advancements in projects initiated by the municipal corporation. These projects, funded by GEF, are integral components of the SCIAP initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The initiative spans 28 cities across 11 developing nations, with India contributing five pilot cities— Mysuru, Jaipur, Bhopal, Vijayawada, and Guntur. The primary goal is to implement sustainable strategies for city management, aiming to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Addressing Environmental Challenges: VMC’s Project Showcase

Commissioner Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar took the opportunity to discuss the ‘Rejuvenation of STPs and DP Stations and Installation of Biogas Energy Plants in VMC’ project with the GEF and UNIDO representatives. Emphasizing the project’s success, he highlighted its role in reducing carbon emissions and lowering Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels, aligning with National Green Tribunal (NGT) norms. The team further visited the Jindal Waste to Energy plant in Guntur for a comprehensive assessment.

Public-Private Partnerships in Focus: Rajiv Gandhi Park and Beyond

The meeting also delved into Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects, featuring prominent city spaces like Rajiv Gandhi Park and KL Rao Park. These discussions reflected the collaborative efforts to enhance the city’s infrastructure and environmental sustainability.

UNIDO SCIAP in Vijayawada: Key Components

Four essential components under UNIDO SCIAP India in Vijayawada were highlighted: strategic sustainable city planning, investment and technology demonstration projects, capacity building for municipal officials and elected representatives in water and sanitation sectors, and support in improving the financial creditworthiness of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

Distinguished GEF Team in Attendance

The GEF team, comprising Senior Evaluation Officer Neeraj Kumar Negi, and International PPP Expert Alexander Francis Burger from the Independent Evaluation Office, actively participated in the discussions. Their presence signals a shared commitment to fostering sustainable urban development.

As Vijayawada charts its course towards a greener and more resilient future, the collaborative efforts between VMC and international organizations like GEF and UNIDO aids to the city’s dedication to environmental stewardship and progressive urban planning.
