Pawan Kalyan’s Keen Focus on Godavari Districts. Will TDP Sacrifice Seats for JSP?

Pawan Kalyan

Janasena Party, even after a decade-long journey in the political landscape, has not yet achieved anything significant. At least, the party leadership, with Pawan Kalyan not yet entering the assembly. In the 2014 general elections, Janasena supported the TDP-BJP alliance but stayed away from contesting. In the 2019 elections, Janasena contested in Andhra Pradesh in alliance with the BSP and Communist parties, securing only one seat in the state. The upcoming 2024 elections will be a crucial test for Janasena Chief Pawan Kalyan. To perform well in the elections, Janasena is formulating careful strategies this time.

Janasena Focuses on Godavari Districts

The leader of Janasena Party, Pawan Kalyan, has decided to contest the upcoming elections in alliance with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Despite being part of the NDA alliance, he is strongly supporting the TDP, emphasizing that he will not allow the anti-YSRCP vote to split. Pawan Kalyan, with his own calculations, believes that aligning with the TDP might help Janasena secure some seats this time. To achieve this goal, Pawan Kalyan is placing a keen focus on the Godavari districts, where the Kapu community, to which he belongs, holds significant influence.

The combined East Godavari and West Godavari districts in Andhra Pradesh have a total of 34 seats. In the 2014 elections, the TDP-BJP alliance secured 28 seats in these districts, with TDP winning 26 and BJP winning 2. YSRCP managed to secure only 5 seats in the Godavari districts in 2014, all in East Godavari, as it scored zero in West Godavari. In the 2019 elections, YSRCP won 27 seats here, TDP secured 6, and Janasena won 1 seat, specifically in the Razole constituency.

Kapus constitute 15% of the total population in Andhra Pradesh, and in the Godavari districts, they wield considerable influence, playing a crucial role in determining the success or failure of candidates. In the 2009 elections, Chiranjeevi, Pawan Kalyan’s brother, led the Praja Rajyam Party, securing 18 seats across the state, including 4 in East Godavari districts. Considering these factors, the Janasena Party appears to be negotiating with the TDP for a higher number of seats in the Godavari districts.

Will TDP sacrifice those seats?

In a recent party meeting, Pawan Kalyan stated that Janasena has the capability of winning 35-40 seats in the upcoming elections. Pawan Kalyan is confident that they can perform well this time, especially in the Godavari districts. There are speculations that Tollywood producer Bhogavalli Prasad might contest from a Janasena ticket this time in one of the constituencies in the Godavari districts.

According to some speculations, Janasena might negotiate for 50 assembly seats and 5 Lok Sabha seats in the upcoming elections. The TDP’s stance is not yet clear, but speculations suggest that they might offer 30 assembly seats and 2 Lok Sabha seats to the Janasena party. While Janasena is seeking seats in the Godavari districts, where TDP has strong leaders like Gorantla Buchaiah Chowdary in Rajahmundry Rural, Kondababu in Kakinada, Jyothula family in Jaggampeta, Arimilli Radha Krishna in Tanuku. The question arises: Will TDP be ready to sacrifice these seats for Janasena in the upcoming elections, and how will it convince party leaders in respective constituencies? We will have to wait and see.
