Telangana Elections: Did Revanth Reddy meet Naidu? Are they planning a return gift to KCR?

Chandrababu Revanth reddy

TPCC President Revanth Reddy, who is a CM candidate for Congress in Telangana, is putting all his efforts into bringing Congress into power in the state. Currently, he is leading the Congress election campaign, attending multiple public meetings. One interesting rumour circulating about him led to a wide discussion on social media and in political circles. As per those reports, Revanth Reddy secretly met Chandrababu Naidu in Hyderabad recently. Chandrababu Naidu gave him instructions regarding elections, and Revanth Reddy thanked him for not contesting the elections.

Discussion around the Revanth-Naidu meeting?

There is no official announcement from either the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) or Revanth Reddy’s side regarding their meeting. However, several local Telugu websites have published news on this matter, and some YouTube channels have conducted discussions with analysts on the topic. In an interview, senior journalist and analyst Bharadwaja Rangavajulla expressed his belief that a meeting did take place between Revanth Reddy and Chandrababu Naidu. Revanth Reddy, known for his loyalty to Chandrababu Naidu, BRS supporters believe that the meeting occurred between both after Naidu was released on bail in the Skill Development scam in Hyderabad.

Currently, the TDP is focusing on Andhra Pradesh and has decided not to contest in the Telangana Assembly Elections. Following this announcement, TDP Telangana president Kasani Gnaneshwar resigned from his post and joined Bharatiya Rashtriya Samithi (BRS). During the press meet announcing his resignation, Gnaneshwar alleged that a section of people within TDP pressured the party leadership to support Congress instead of contesting. The ongoing political scenario appears to support this argument, suggesting that TDP may be supporting Congress behind the scenes.

When Chandrababu Naidu was arrested in the Skill Development scam in Andhra Pradesh, Minister KTR opposed rallies by IT employees in Hyderabad, stating that they would not allow protests on political issues from a neighboring state. He suggested that the protesters carry out their demonstrations in Bhimavaram or Rajahmundry but not in Telangana. In contrast, TPCC’s Revanth Reddy supported the rallies and questioned the BRS government for not allowing protests by TDP supporters. Reddy described Chandrababu Naidu as a national leader and criticized KTR for his comments.

TDP leaders are openly supporting Congress

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), currently non-existent in Telangana, appears to be favoring Congress by staying away from elections, with the intention of shifting its voter base to Congress. Recently, the TDP incharge in Khammam extended support for Congress candidate Tummala Nageshwara Rao, while in Wyra, TDP cadre extended support for Congress candidate Maloth Ramdas Naik. Similarly, in Wanaparthy, TDP cadre extended support to Congress. TDP anticipates that it can sway settler voters towards the Congress party, especially in Hyderabad and Khammam regions.

In a recent public meeting in Palakurthy, Revanth Reddy urged local TDP cadre to rally behind the Congress party in order to defeat BRS candidate Errabelli Dayakar Rao. Reddy asserted that Dayakar Rao is the primary cause of TDP’s misfortune in the state. He alleged that Dayakar Rao was responsible for his arrest in the vote-for-cash scam in 2015. In this case, Revanth Reddy was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) giving bribes to BRS-nominated MLA Stephen Son to vote for TDP in the then MLC elections. In the aftermath, leaked voice tapes allegedly featuring Chandrababu Naidu led to warnings from KCR, stating that not even God could save him. Subsequently, Chandrababu Naidu permanently relocated to Andhra Pradesh, while Revanth Reddy joined the Congress party.

Naidu’s revenge plan against KCR!

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which had initially emerged against the Congress party with the slogan “Telugu Respect”. But in complete contradiction, the TDP went into alliance with the Congress during the 2018 assembly elections in Telangana. Chandrababu Naidu actively campaigned for the TDP during that time. However, the Bharatiya Rashtriya Samithi (BRS) capitalised on this alliance, projecting it as a part of the Grand Alliance, and accused Andhra leader Chandrababu Naidu of attempting to dominate Telangana.

In the election results, KCR’s BRS party secured 88 seats, while the parties of the Grand Alliance, including Congress, managed to win 19 seats, and TDP secured only 2 seats. Following the election outcome, KCR, in a press conference, announced his intention to give a “return gift” to Chandrababu Naidu in the upcoming Andhra elections. In the 2019 Andhra Pradesh elections, the TDP faced significant setbacks, securing only 23 seats. There have been allegations from the TDP that KCR financially supported Jagan in those elections.

Currently, it seems that Naidu is contemplating revenge on KCR using Revanth Reddy. If Congress, under the leadership of Revanth Reddy, manages to win in Telangana, it could potentially benefit Naidu in the Andhra elections.

KTR’s U-turn and the BRS mouthpiece’s anti-stand on Naidu

KTR made a clear U-turn on the issue of Chandrababu Naidu’s arrest. Upon realizing that Andhra settlers in Hyderabad might turn against the BRS party in the upcoming elections, he changed his stance regarding Naidu’s arrest. When Lokesh tweeted about Chandrababu Naidu’s health in jail, KTR expressed solidarity on Twitter. Even Minister Harish Rao and MLC Kavitha conveyed sadness over Chandrababu Naidu’s arrest. Just a few days ago, KTR announced that they would name Panama Chowrasta after ‘NTR’. In a recent interview, he mentioned that in the last 25 years, only three chief ministers come to mind: Chandrababu Naidu, YS Rajasekhar Reddy, and KCR.

On one side, KTR appears to be showing a soft corner for Chandrababu Naidu, while on the other hand, BRS party’s mouthpiece, Namasthe Telangana, is publishing articles against Naidu, labeling him as anti-Telangana, again eyeing on the state helping Congress Party. The Congress party claims that BRS-BJP have a secret understanding, and they believe BRS behind the removal of Bandi Sanjay from the BJP president post. Likewise, BRS alleges that Naidu was behind Congress high command appointing Revanth Reddy as the TPCC post, and both Congress and TDP have a secret understanding. Compared to the 2018 Telangana assembly elections, the current scenario appears to be much more complex, making it difficult for people to understand what’s really happening on the ground. It remains to be seen which party narratives can influence people and, ultimately, which party the public will vote for!
