Tamil Nadu Caste

Six from upper caste unleashed a brutal attack on two Dalits after knowing their caste identity. The six perpetrators belonging to an intermediate caste of OBC have been arrested by the police in Thatchanallur, located in the Tirunelveli district. They are accused of engaging in acts of violence, forced nudity, and urination onto two individuals from the Scheduled Caste community. Tirunelveli has emerged as a focal point of caste-related conflicts in the southern region of Tamil Nadu.

FIR Registered After Tussle

The individuals responsible for the incident were under the influence of alcohol and cannabis. The victims were forcibly disrobed, physically assaulted and urinated upon their entire body. “We were detained there till night by the gang. They also took ₹5,000 and two mobile phones from us before chasing us away from the spot. After going to a relative’s house nearby, we contacted our parents, who admitted us to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital,” one of the victims told the police.

The Thatchanallur police have taken legal action by registering a case in response to a complaint filed by Mr Manoj Kumar and Mr Mariappan. This case is being registered under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. As a result of this legal action, Ponnumani (25) from Thaazhaiyooththu, Nallamuthu (21), Aayiram (19), Ramar (22), Siva (22), and Lakshmanan (22), all residents of Thirumalaikozhunthupuram near Palayamkottai, have been arrested by the police.

On Tuesday, they were placed in judicial detention. A case has been registered under six sections at the Thachanallur Police Station. Subsequently, as a result of the influence exerted by the VCK and CPI(M), a case pertaining to acts of atrocity was lodged against the aforementioned individuals.

Increasing trend of Caste Violence in Tamil Nadu

BJP President K. Annamalai said that the events that have happened in Nellai are a grave and deplorable atrocity. The persistence of caste-based atrocities in Tamil Nadu is deemed to be morally and socially wrong. There is a concern that inside our culture, we are making some mistakes. Further, he stated that there is concern over our education system, particularly in primary education, where we may be inadvertently perpetuating the divisive notion of caste within school environments in Tamil Nadu.

Annamalai alleged there is a concern that numerous political parties which engage in caste-based politics are perpetuating and exacerbating caste divisions throughout society. The persistence of caste prejudice in undeveloped regions, including Tamil Nadu, is a matter of great concern. We must strive as a society as a whole to annihilate the caste system collectively.
