Pawan Kalyan to visit Kakinada: will he contest from the Pithapuram constituency?

Pawan Kalyan

Janasena Chief Pawan Kalyan is set to visit Kakinada for a 3-day tour aimed at reviewing the party’s position in the constituencies of the combined East Godavari district. He will be there on 28th, 29th, and 30th. During his visit, Pawan Kalyan will engage in discussions with party in-charges, key leaders, and party workers. Given Janasena’s alliance with TDP in the upcoming 2024 elections, Pawan Kalyan will provide strategic guidance to the party cadre.

Additionally, there are indications that he may personally visit certain constituencies to assess the ground reality. Notably, Pawan Kalyan is placing particular emphasis on the Godavari districts, where the Kapu community, to which he belongs, holds significant influence. The party is optimistic about securing a substantial number of seats in the Godavari districts in the upcoming elections.

Pawan Kalyan likely to contest from Pithapuram?

Pawan Kalyan, who faced defeat in the 2019 elections for both the Gajuwaka and Bhimavaram seats, is now contemplating contesting from the Pithapuram constituency in the Kakinada district. Pithapuram holds significance for Pawan Kalyan as it is dominated by Kapu voters, to which he belongs. This constituency comprises approximately 80,000 Kapu votes out of a total of 1,86,682 votes. In the 2009 elections, Praja Rajyam, the party led by Pawan Kalyan’s brother Chiranjeevi, emerged victorious in this very seat.

Till now, in the constituency majority MLAs won from are Kapu community. In the previous elections, the Janasena candidate Makineedi Seshu Kumari, despite being not well known face, garnered significant votes. Considering these tactics and the strong presence of Kapu voters in Pithapuram, Janasena leaders are advising Pawan Kalyan that this constituency is a secure choice to ensure victory in the upcoming assembly elections.

In the 2019 elections, YSRCP candidate Dorababu Pendem won in Pithapuram with a majority of 14,992 votes. TDP candidate SVSN Varma received 68,470 votes, while Janasena candidate Sheshu Kumari garnered 28,011 votes. As TDP and Janasena were set to contest elections in alliance, Janasena was very confident of winning the seat this time.

For Pawan Kalyan, this is almost a do-or-die situation. If he fails to secure entry into the assembly this time, it will significantly impact the sustainability of his party in the future. That’s why he is also considering contesting from a safer seat to ensure victory in the election.

There is speculation that Pawan Kalyan might choose to contest from Kakinada Rural. During his visit to Kakinada, Pawan Kalyan may review potential constituencies and decide whether to contest from Kakinada Rural, Pithapuram, or both.

First visit after alliance

This is the first time Janasena Chief Pawan Kalyan is visiting districts after forming an alliance with the Telugu Desam Party. The Janasena party holds an 18% vote share across the state, with the Godavari districts boasting the highest vote bank at 35%. This is a key factor influencing Pawan Kalyan’s selective approach on this tour. Given the alliance with the TDP, Pawan Kalyan aims to strategically identify strongholds during his Kakinada tour, determining which seats the party will seek in collaboration with the TDP. In the 2019 elections, the party contested 137 seats but only secured one.

This time, Pawan Kalyan is adopting a more strategic approach, focusing on a limited number of seats to maximise the party’s impact. Till now, the numbers for seat sharing between the TDP and Janasena alliance have not been confirmed. Pawan Kalyan is expecting at least 30 seats. After the disaster in the Telangana elections, Janasena lost the capability to bargain for more seats in the AP elections.
