Michaung Cyclone: 8 dead in chennai, Red alert issued for Andhra Pradesh, Telangana

Michaung cyclone is severely affecting Chennai city, with at least 8 people having lost their lives due to heavy rains. Numerous areas in Chennai are facing water blockages, including railway bridges, underpasses, the airport, colonies, and metro stations. The Greater Chennai Corporation has issued an alert, urging the public to stay at home and not venture out unless it’s an emergency. All educational institutions and government offices in the city are closed.

8 people dead in Chennai

Chennai police have identified 8 deceased individuals, with details for two of them yet to be established. The reported casualties include an unidentified man (70) found dead near Vidyanathan flower, Murugan (35) who died after a tree fell on him at Besant Nagar, an unidentified woman (60) discovered dead at the Foreshore Estate bus depot, Ganesh (70) who was electrocuted while walking on the road at Thuraipakkam, Dharath (53) at Ellaimman Boyd Street found dead after a compound wall collapse, Sehlim (50) whose body was found in floodwaters inside a school campus, and Mirajul Islam (19) whose body was found at a school in Korrupuram.

The police also mentioned their efforts to rescue pregnant women, children, and senior citizens stranded in flooded areas. A total of 162 relief camps have been set up by the government in Chennai, accommodating 2477 residents. The government is operating 20 kitchens to provide food and has requested the central government to supply ready-made food items.

Red Alert for Andhra Pradesh

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Cyclone Michaung will make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh by Tuesday forenoon. A red alert has been issued for several districts in North Coastal, South Coastal, and Rayalaseema regions. The IMD warns of extreme rainfall in districts including Konaseema, Nellore, Prakasam, Krishna, Bapatla, Guntur, Tirupati, Chittoor, Annamayya, and West Godavari. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Eluru, Kakinada, East Godavari, Palnadu, NTR, Sri Satya Sai, and Nandyala districts.

Red Alert for Telangana

IMD has issued a red alert indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall for isolated places in the districts of Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Khammam. An orange alert has been issued for Suryapet, Mahaubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, and a yellow alert for Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Nalgonda, Siddipet, and Janagoan districts. The IMD forecasted gusty winds of 40-50 kmph along with thunderstorms and lightning in isolated places of Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal, and Nagarkurnool. As the cyclone intensifies and crosses the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam, it will also affect Telangana areas.
