Japan Review: A very Forgettable film

japan review

The multilingual (Tamil, Telugu, kannada, and Malayalam) Diwali release film Japan is Actor Karthi’s 25th film and Director Raju Murugan’s fifth film. The movie Japan opens with two striking incidents: A young mother walking away from her drunk husband and a Jewelry shop robbery. In the end, these two incidents link, but it seems tiresome.

The lose plot

Director Raju Murugan set a robbery of Rs.200 crores worth in a Jewelry showroom as the movie’s plot in Coimbatore city. The police investigation reveals that the protagonist, Japan (Karthi), is the prime suspect, and a special team is formed to search for him. Interestingly, Japan was perplexed and understood that someone had done the theft in his name. However, the Police and Japan started to search for the thief, and what happens next is the story. The character of Japan is witty, unpredictable, unexpected, emotional and HIV Positive.

Raju Murugan slowly unveils the characters like police, criminals, politicians, movie stars and business tycoons in connection with the burglary. Murugan seems to be focused on delivering an overdose of commerciality, as his last film, Gypsy, did not go well commercially because of its artistic level. The protagonist is too intelligent and street-smart, but the antagonist is too weak to stand against him. As the Villain is portrayed as meek, the film doesn’t hold the audience.

The core ideas look good in the script but could have engagingly unfolded on screen. The tonality of the film and random lectures gradually push the audience to a nadir. The sole positive aspect is Ravivarman’s cinematography, which is rich, grandeur and soothing. Apart from that, GV Prakash’s background scoring enhances the film to a certain extent.

The flashback scenes did not connect with the audience, and the artificial infusion of black comedy seemed boring. The film lacks good screenplay, fight, comedy or songs which is a trademark package in the success of Karthi films. The movie is much more predictable, and most characters lack depth. A coherent script could have saved the movie from a disaster.

What to Look for?

Japan is an average money heist thriller. It may be a weak story thread if we see it in outline, but it does makes sense after all, as a directors film. Karthi played his part of a goofy anti-hero nicely. Some good funny scenes, emotional mother, and action sequences are the primary takeout from the screen. All in all its a one time watch.
