Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Global Maritime India Summit 2023, set to run from October 17 to 19, 2023. This two-day summit is hosted at the MMRDA Grounds in BKC, Mumbai.
On October 17, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the third edition of the Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS) 2023 through video conference. During the summit, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the emergence of a new global order and the world’s growing expectations from India. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways organised this highly anticipated maritime event, initially scheduled to take place at Pragati Maidan in Delhi. However, following Prime Minister Modi’s recommendation, the event was relocated to the MMRDA Grounds in BKC, Mumbai.
“Today’s India is working towards becoming a developed nation in the next 25 years. We are bringing revolutionary changes in every sector,” he said. PM Modi also mentioned that whenever India’s maritime capabilities have been strong, both the country and the world have benefitted from it, and therefore we have been working to strengthen this sector for the last 9 to 10 years. Moreover, the PM also laid the foundation and inaugurated port-related projects worth over Rs 18,800 crore at the GMIS summit. He also launched the foundation stone of the Tuna Tekra all-weather deep-draft terminal at the Deendayal Port Authority in Gujarat which cost around Rs 4,539 crore. This terminal is being developed to help the India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor.

Hosting high-profile international events like the Global Maritime India Summit can project a positive image of the government, especially if it's seen as a well-organised and influential gathering. Prime Minister Modi's involvement in inaugurating and emphasising India's role in the global maritime industry can be seen as an attempt to bolster his political image. A successful summit could potentially have a positive impact on his party's popularity in the run-up to the next elections. While the focus of the summit is largely economic and political, Prime Minister Modi also mentioned the goal of becoming a developed nation in the next 25 years. This suggests a long-term vision for social and economic development. However, it's important to note that achieving such goals would require policies that address issues like poverty alleviation, social safety nets, and inclusive economic development. It's crucial for the government to ensure that economic growth translates into improved living standards for all segments of society.
