As Cyclone Michaung unleashed its fury upon Tirupati, the district found itself coping with the effects of nature’s wrath. In the face of adversity, the district administration rose to the occasion, intensifying relief efforts to bring back a semblance of normalcy to the affected areas.

Highway Havoc: National Highway-5 Bears the Brunt

While many highways in Tirupati withstood the onslaught, the crucial National Highway-5, connecting Kolkata and Chennai, bore the scars of the cyclone’s fury. The stretch between Naidupeta and Tada faced substantial damage as the overflow from the river Kalangi inundated the road, causing disruptions in high-density traffic. In a testament to their resilience, the police department, under the leadership of Deputy Superintendent Rajagopal Reddy, swiftly implemented measures to restore the operationality of the highway.

Patching Potholes: Sullurpeta Toll Plaza Area Navigates Through Challenges

The area surrounding the Sullurpeta toll plaza, particularly near the private engineering college, emerged as a focal point of devastation. Commuters grappled with extensive damage, navigating through roads resembling a lunar landscape of potholes. Deputy Superintendent Rajagopal Reddy, at the helm of a dedicated police force, strategically placed sandbags in breached areas, accompanied by cautionary measures to ensure public safety. Recognizing the urgency, the Panchayat Raj engineering department embarked on road repairs, prioritizing constituencies such as Sullurpeta, Gudur, and Satyavedu, which bore the brunt of Cyclone Michaung.

Power Struggle: APSPDCL Crew’s Battle Against Electric Disruptions

Simultaneously, the Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) took on the challenge of addressing the power crisis triggered by the cyclone. Crews ventured into the SPSR Nellore district, working tirelessly to restore electric poles and mend snapped power lines. Overseeing these restoration efforts was K. Santhosh Rao, the chairman, and managing director of APSPDCL. Highlighting the magnitude of the damage incurred, Rao emphasized the paramount importance of the restoration process. 

With 11.53 lakh power services and 1.65 lakh agricultural services affected, power consumers were encouraged to report grievances through toll-free numbers 1912 or 1800 425 155333, with additional support available on WhatsApp at 91333 31912.

Prakasam Barrage Overflow: Vijayawada Battles the Onslaught of Water Surge

In a parallel development, officials from the Water Resources Department in Vijayawada responded swiftly to the impact of Cyclone Michaung. With the Prakasam Barrage facing flooding due to incessant rainfall recording about 21.90 cm in the district over two days, the officials lifted 25 gates, each one foot in height, to discharge 18,500 cusecs into the sea. Maintaining the barrage crest level at 12 feet, the department continued discharging excess water downstream to manage the aftermath of the cyclone.
