Cyclone Michaung: Opposition alleges DMK’s inefficiency and Failure to control Flood

MK Stalin Chennai Flood

The heavy rainfall caused by cyclone Michaung resulted in many casualties in Chennai, prompting the Tamil Nadu government to provide financial assistance to families affected by the rainfall.

There are no fast fixes or shortcuts to correcting years of poor maintenance and repair spending. Several trees fell, water stagnated on practically all roads, overhead cables flew loose, and storm drains became clogged with plastic rubbish. Many trains were cancelled, the airport was forced to close, and people were reported to be stuck in a variety of locations.

The opposition came heavily on the DMK government for their failure to control the disaster and incapacity to address the flood management. Most of the opposition parties pointed out the Tamil Nadu government’s inefficiency in tackling the cyclone’s impact.

AIADMK Attack MK Stalin

The Palaniswami said DMK had started a ₹4,000-crore project to improve the city’s stormwater drains, but these drains could not “withstand the impact of even a normal level of rainfall.”  People in the city who were hit by the rain were “lamenting” that they had not benefited from the fact that 178 of the city’s 200 councillors were from the DMK.  Following an “unprecedented” rise in property tax, the government should make sure that people have access to essential services.

Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam has urged the Tamil Nadu government to extend the time limit for electricity bill payment by at least one month to the people living in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur districts. AIDMK Former Minister Jayakumar said that around 4,000 complaints received by the Chennai Corporation, only 300 complaints have been acted upon. There can be no better example of how dysfunctional is this DMK government. It is said that they have fed lakhs of people. I also saw it on TV. It doesn’t look like it was put in even one place. It is a lie from the bottom to the top level.

BJP seek Transparency and Action

TN BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan, National President of the Women’s Wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party said Is Chief Minister Stalin ready to publish a white paper on the funds allocated for Singara Chennai project? Are you ready to give a white paper on the funds allocated by the DMK regime for dredging the rivers and cleaning the cesspit?

Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai stated, “The story of Chennai is same for the last 45 years: the mismanagement of the DMK government make it worst and it is a systemic failure.

NTK Chief Seeman Vent Anger

Although no one can prevent natural disasters, it is imperative that a city has drainage facilities, drains and waterways to deal with the rain. It is a shame that the two major Dravidian parties that have been ruling Tamil Nadu for half a century have failed to do so and have turned the city itself into an uninhabitable land.

No one can deny that every time the government wakes up and takes action only after the people suffer, it is a sign of incompetence and negligence on the part of the government.

Tamil MP’s Seeking Assistance from the Central Government

On Tuesday, DMK legislators brought up the flood problem in both houses of parliament and asked the central government to give ₹5000 as short-term aid. They also demanded that a Central team visit the State and make an assessment of the damage caused by the cyclone.

DMK MP T Siva says, ” The CM has written to the PM seeking early relief for the state. The damage is high and the situation has not come back to normal.”

DMK leader T.R. Baalu brought up the issue during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha and said that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and other officials from the State government were working hard to help. In the Rajya Sabha, Tiruchi Siva reiterated the Tamil Nadu government’s appeal for temporary assistance from the central government to help people and fix up damage caused by heavy rains in five districts of Tamil Nadu. MDMK MP Vaiko told, he is seeking the Union Government to provide necessary assistance to Tamil Nadu to speed up the storm rescue operations.
