On Saturday, December 3, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Cyclone Michaung would be over the southwest Bay of Bengal. The next day, it’s expected to landfall in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The government agency has issued an ‘orange’ alert over Tamil Nadu, as well as coastal and interior Andhra Pradesh.

Sunanda, the Managing Director of the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, says that a low-pressure system that was forming in the Bay of Bengal region has grown stronger into a “depression” and will likely get even stronger into a “cyclonic storm.”
The cyclone will intensify in the next 24 hours and turn into a deep depression. Then it will get stronger and turn into a cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours. The storm is moving northwest and will likely hit the northern coast of Tamil Nadu and the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh on the evening of December 4. However, from December 3, the rain and winds will likely get stronger.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has designated 18 teams to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Puducherry. Additionally, 10 extra teams are on standby to address any unexpected circumstances. The Coast Guard, Army, and Navy have geared up their rescue and relief teams, as well as ships and aircrafts to be on standby. The government of Puducherry has announced a holiday for colleges in the territories of Puducherry, Karaikal, and Yanam due to forthcoming Cyclone Michaung.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, held a comprehensive meeting on Friday with the heads of administration from 12 districts. The group discussed the probability of significant rainfall affecting different districts of Tamil Nadu in the upcoming 2-3 days.

Andhra Pradesh
Due to the heavy downpour expected from Sunday to Tuesday, a State control room has been set up at the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority. The control room consistently monitors meteorological conditions. APSDMA recommended that farmers implement vital precautions to protect their farms. It is recommended that fishermen refrain from going out to sea for fishing.

The East Coast Railway has cancelled 54 trains in the wake of the fresh warnings. The officials have issued yellow warnings to the farmers and the disaster management team is on stand by.

South Central Railway
South Central Railway (SCR) has advised customers to take caution when making their travel plans due to the anticipated suspension of train services in the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu caused by the ‘Michaung’ cyclone weather conditions.
These modifications are expected to persist for the next few days. There is a likelihood of torrential downpours accompanied by strong gusts of wind in the coastal area. According to additional GM R. Dhananjayulu, train services in the impacted stretches may be redirected, rescheduled, partially cancelled, or completely cancelled based on the requirements of the circumstance.
Passengers are advised to contact the nearest railway station for any train-related inquiries during this period.
