Chennai grapples with Flood after cyclone: People, Netas and Heroes

Aftermath of the Cyclone Michaung in Chennai, the deluge’s effect still struck on people’s lives. Rescue workers are working hard to get people out of the highly flooded areas.

The capital of Tamil Nadu was still inundated after the cyclone hit land on Tuesday, and more than 61,000 people were taking safety in shelters run by the government. Due to a lack of water, food, and power, many others stayed in service apartments and cheap hotels.

Water-logged Anand Nagar

Most of the parts in Anand Nagar is still inundated with flood water. There is no electricity, food or drinking water. Hence, people are moving out of their homes.

In the MKP Nagar, for the last three days, around four feet water is stagnated. No government officials or rescue teams visited this area to help the people.

The people demonstrated a protest by blocking main roads in Mylapore in Luz Signal area demanding restoration of power and seeking drinking water. 

The key IT hub OMR is inundated by flood water. It became a muddy Venice of Chennai, disconnecting with the arterial line of the city because of water.

Five furlong road, Velachery, where Construction was happening prior to the cyclone, collapsed due to massive rains.

Unsong Heroes save lives and win hearts

Some men are seen rescuing dogs from a water logged street. Netizens shared the video extensively and hailed the heroes. In the darkest moments, we shall find the brightest of the lights.

Chennai Ramakrishna Math sadhus are seen distributing food and many videos from their good work on the flooded streets of Chennai went viral over social media. God comes in many forms, in these moments we must trust in the almighty, working through the all of us.

Few citizens are seen helping a man in need. They are seen distributing raincoat and a cup of tea to a man seating in rain. Sometimes, we must share a little warmth with the cold world.

IT Parks Lost Fiber Connectivity

The state-owned ELCOT IT park at Sholinganallur, which houses Wipro, HCL Tech, and Tech Mahindra, was surrounded by water.

Most of the companies lost power and fiber connectivity. However, net connectivity remains a problem and many techies are unable to access their employers’ internal portals remotely from their homes.

Centre Approves Fund for Tamil Nadu

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Central government has given ₹561.29 crore to the Chennai Basin project for “Integrated Urban Flood Management” activities. This is the first project to help reduce urban flooding. “Chennai is facing major floods, the third such occurring in the last eight years. We are witnessing more instances of metropolitan cities receiving excessive rainfall, leading to sudden flooding,” Shah wrote in his post on X.

He also pointed out that it is the “first in a series of urban flood mitigation efforts and will help develop a broader framework for urban flood management.”

“Guided by a pro-active approach, PM Narendra Modi has approved the first urban flood mitigation project of ₹561.29 crore for ‘Integrated Urban Flood Management activities for Chennai Basin Project’ under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF), which also includes Central assistance of ₹500 crore,” he said.
