Chitrapu Pushpita Laya, boldly stepping into the political arena as the Bahujan Samaj Party’s [BSP] candidate for the Warangal East Constituency, is marking the inauguration of transgender representation in the state’s political spectrum. Laya’s candidacy symbolises a significant leap forward for the transgender community, representing a transformative step towards their active participation in decision-making processes. The BSP,in a commendable show of commitment to unity, diversity, and inclusion in politics, has rallied behind this historic campaign. Hailing from Priyadarshi colony in Warangal, Laya, who completed her intermediate education at a local college, articulates her mission to bridge the gap between the people and their representation. As she undertakes a door-to-door campaign, Laya remains undeterred by initial reactions, determined to reach every household and address the concerns of her constituency.
Laya is the first transgender candidate to run in Telangana history. However, Laya shared and was acutely aware of the suffering endured by the Dalit population in the state even before she entered the political sphere. Born from a Scheduled Caste household herself, she witnessed her caste members struggle for fundamental rights and faced transphobia in the classroom.
Political Inclusivity Triumphs
Acknowledging the challenges faced by the transgender community, Laya emphasises the importance of understanding and addressing their unique struggles. Despite an initial voter base of around 2557 out of 58,000, she appeals to voters to entrust her with the responsibility to serve the marginalised sections of society, including SCs, STs, and OBCs.

This isn’t the first instance of transgender individuals breaking barriers in Indian politics. In the 2019 elections, Radha from Tamil Nadu aimed to become the first transgender elected to Parliament. The Aam Aadmi Party fielded Chirpi Bhawani in Uttar Pradesh, and Kajal Kinner contested from Odisha’s Jaipur constituency for the Bahujan Samaj Party.
On a national level, Sneha Kale became the first transgender to contest the Lok Sabha Election from Mumbai, emphasising her role as a social worker. Meanwhile, Ashwathi made history as the first openly intersex candidate to contest in the Lok Sabha Elections 2019, running from the Ernakulam constituency.
Recognizing the need for social security and mainstream inclusion, some states like Jharkhand have also taken steps to integrate the transgender community into the universal pension scheme. These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to fostering a more inclusive society.
