2024 Elections: YS Jagan Considering Denial of Tickets to 50-65 MLAs

YSRCP Jagan

The impact of the Telangana election results is reflecting in the political landscape of Andhra Pradesh. As BRS chief KCR ran the election by repeating the MLA candidates and lost, now the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and YSRCP chief, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, is considering changing the candidates for the upcoming 2024 elections. Two days ago, Jagan changed the in-charges in 11 constituencies, and the latest speculation is that YS Jagan is likely to change 65 candidates for the upcoming elections.

Is Jagan changing 65 candidates?

In Telangana, BRS changed candidates in only 12 segments and won 10 of them. Consequently, BRS leaders and cadre strongly believe that if they had changed more candidates, they might have won the elections. Taking this into consideration, Jagan has decided to go into the elections with significant changes in candidates. According to reports, Jagan may change 50-65 candidates, excluding at least 40 from receiving tickets and reshuffling at least 25 candidates. Some speculations suggest that the IPAC team working for YSRCP has also recommended changes in candidates in many places. According to these speculations, information has already been received about some candidates who are losing their tickets.

Are ministers also on the list of those losing their tickets?

According to some Telugu media reports, Jagan might not offer tickets to certain ministers, including Ambati Rambabu, Jogi Ramesh, Gummanuru Jayaram, Narayanaswamy, Chelluboyina Venugopal, and Pinipe Vishwarup. In Telangana, KCR, who has a soft spot for his MLAs, gave tickets to the majority of them, but even six ministers also lost the elections. Jagan is keen on avoiding a similar mistake and has decided not to grant tickets to those facing public opposition.

YSRCP is aiming for 175 seats in the upcoming 2024 elections, with the slogan ‘why not 175‘, having won 151 seats in 2019. To achieve this goal, they are conducting programs like “Gadapa Gadapaku Mana Prabhutvam” and “Samajika Sadhikara Yatra” to reach the masses. However, the party acknowledges that some leaders may be lacking in connecting with the people. The party is contemplating offering MP tickets to specific MLAs in the next election. Discussions are underway with Botsa Satyanarayana to persuade him to contest as an MP. His recent comment, ‘nothing is permanent in YSRCP,’ adds weight to these speculations.

Recently, YSRCP MLA Alla Ramakrishna Reddy resigned from the party and his MLA post. Despite being a staunch loyalist fighting against TDP corruption in the courts, he received clear indications from the party that he would not be given a ticket this time, leading to his resignation. Reports suggest that YSRCP may allocate the Mangalagiri ticket to a BC candidate this time, with Ganji Srinivas’s name surfacing for the position. As Jagan is determined to win at any cost and is changing candidates facing opposition or appearing weak on the ground, it’s anticipated that MLA resignations may increase in the coming days.
